I used to do construction. The day before we had dug out a basement. It had a 5' ceiling and we had to dig it out to be 8' and have a concrete floor. We put the dirt in the dumpster using 5 gallon bucketsS.
Over night it rained so when the guy came to pick up the dumpster it was a bit over weight. The first truck blew a hydraulic house. This guy got it loaded with a bit of a show.

yep it was very unpleasant work. we filled the buckets by shovel then had to crawl out the bulkhead. I was dirty and sweaty, then had to take the T (subway) home. The truck came crashing down once the weight shifted forward and bounced like a low rider a couple times.

Someday I want to dig my basement down from its current 6'3"/5'8" height down to 8', and also waterproof it and put in a sump pump. I do most of the work on my own house, but I will definitely be paying others to do that one.
I never get tired of watching roll-off trucks load up. I don't know why, but I always have to watch.

so when we did the basement, we left about a foot of the existing floor around the edge so that we didn't disturb the footings or the soil underneath. we then built forms and filled the edge with concrete to make a solid edge. so in the end they lost a little over a foot around the entire perimeter but that beats having the foundation cave. the stud wall was build on the inside of the new 'footing' so that the sheetrock would pass flush with the face of the concrete down to the new floor. we did perforated piping around the edge with a pump in two opposing corners.

Yeah, that's the way I've always seen it done. Two pumps is a good idea, too. Someday, when I have more monies!
